Joseph John Gilmartin was born in 1971 in Dundee Scotland. His family emigrated to South Africa in the early seventies where he lived for over two decades. He returned to Scotland in 2000 and now lives in Dunfermline Fife.
Joe's paintings are created in a unique and original style. His themes are primarily representational cityscapes and profile faces. Joe has recently included other subjects and themes into his collection including human form and religious representations. Joe’s inspiration comes from subjects that exude emotion and that he has either felt, observed or is passionate about.
He uses expressive brushwork and palette techniques to create and represent feeling and depth. His artwork comes in the form of acrylic/oil on canvas.
In his words: - “I still find myself contemplating my initial interest in painting, and picking up a brush for the first time was more of a surprise to myself than to anyone I know” In 2010 many influences had come together and helped Joe shape vision of the world that was to inform Joe's passion to create, not just an image, but an experience, something to heal and enrich, something that may make a difference.
Throughout this period Joe painted the world around him. Travelling extensively to the Europe, Africa as well as locally. With a deeper creative current that pulls Joe towards his particular subjects :- age and expression in the creative realm; a sense of something more, portraits of faces not necessarily wanting to be seen but to be felt and expressed beyond the world of tangible realities. Cityscapes of warmth and beauty. His art is an expression of places, love, age and joy.
He has come a long way since he started taking painting in 2008. “... by creating an emotion from a subject is what makes it all worthwhile”.
